Maulana Asim Omar is the Emir or Chief of South Asia of Islamist group organization Al-Qaeda. Ayman al-Zawahiri announced his appointment in a video. He is a writer who wrote many books about current and future realities. ==Background== Little is known about this shadowy figure. Reuters 〔http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/09/us-southasia-alqaeda-insight-idUSKBN0H42DN20140909〕 reported that he hails from Pakistan and had facilitated the safe stay of terrorist Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where bin Laden was killed. He is believed to have studied in Jamia Uloom-e-Islamia, Karachi; one of its clerics, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, was a supporter of the Taliban. Omar is also reported to have studied in Darul Uloom Haqqania, an Islamist madrasa in northwest Pakistan, which is said to have produced many Taliban commanders.
